Luck O' the Irish

Today is Saint Patrick's Day, If you didn't already know that then have probably been pinched by now!
Way back in the 5th century, a young lad was kidnapped from his English home by a band of Irish Renegades. They brought him to Ireland and he was sold as a slave. He worked as a shepherd for 6 years during which he turned to God for support. It is said that one day God told him it was time to leave Ireland and after a 200 mile walk he escaped back into England where he entered a monastery and God told him, after 15 years of study, to return to Ireland. He went with the Pope's blessing to encourage the few christians in Ireland and to win the rest of it for God. The Legends say that he used the Shamrock to Illistrate the Trinity and that in order to win the Irish over he adapted pagan art to Chistian beliefs, the celtic cross is one of them.
We celebrate the 17th of March because that is the day he died.
the original St. Patrick's Day Parade was actually in America with the influx of arriving irish Immigrants, it started out as a way for the Irish-American troops in the military to celebrate their heritage. It spread rapidly and now we run a round pinching each other if someone forgets to wear green!
So, have a blessed Day and don't forget yer green!

Once again you have enriched a holiday by reminding me of its origins. Thank you and Happy St. Patrick's day.!

P.S. I didn't wear green, but the chances of my getting pinched are pretty slim these days... We celebraed at work by eating cupcakes with green frosting and spinach dip with crackers.
