Strange Flashes of Light

Today as I was driving to meet my carpool buddy I saw a huge flash of light, after we met we continued to see them every couple of minutes. They lit up the dark sky! It didn't look like lightning and it wasn't very stormy out. At first we thought maybe some transformers are blowing since it is really windy, but we never hit any patches where the power was out and we kept seeing flashes every few minutes, until it got lighter outside. How strange!!! Anybody know what it might have been?
